"Do I need to get a separate eye cream? I use my facial moisturizer!". "What can an eye cream offer me?". "It didn't even occur to me to use one!"
We imagine you have the same or similar questions. After all, what more does an eye cream offer than a moisturizer?
The answer is: It offers a lot and we'll explain it all in detail as well as what to look out for when choosing an eye cream.
So before you say "No, I don't need an eye cream, I wear my moisturizer under my eyes too" keep reading.
What is the difference between face moisturizer and eye cream?
A moisturizer is intended to maintain and/or increase the hydration of the skin to keep it healthy, firm and fresh. By that logic it could be used anywhere on the body-after all, a little hydration never hurt anyone! Right?
Wrong!
Unlike a simple facial moisturizer, eye cream is specifically designed to be used in the eye area. The skin under the eyes is thinner and more fragile than the rest of the face so it needs special care. Also, there are no sebaceous pores in this area to regulate oiliness. That is why it is usually the first place to "break" and why annoying fine lines and wrinkles appear.
Another reason to avoid using any moisturizer under the eyes is because the concentrations of ingredients in moisturizers are higher than those allowed for the eye area. The result is the creation of unwanted irritation and allergic -perhaps- reactions.
When is the right time to start using eye cream?
You can start using eye cream at any time. Yes, even if you haven't reached your early thirties, even if wrinkles haven't made their appearance yet!
Keeping the under eye area moisturized keeps aging at bay, as moisture loss and insufficient hydration are among the #1 factors of aging.
Also, an eye cream is not just aimed at anti-aging. At a younger age you can use an eye cream to reduce puffiness and dark circles in the eyes. Good, right?
Then as you get older and as your skin's needs change, it is imperative that you start using a restorative, richer eye cream with anti-aging action.
You can find a suitable eye cream on the market according to your age. And keep in mind that the earlier you start using an eye cream and the more consistent you are in your use, the more your youthful look will thank you in the long run!
How do I apply the eye cream?
Despite its name, eye cream should not be applied too close to the eyes, such as on the mobile upper part of the eye or just below the eyelids.
The correct amount is about the size of a pea. Start the application from the inner eye socket outwards and in the same way on the upper eye socket. Apply it by making small strokes with your fingers. The little taps make a light massage and thus stimulate blood circulation in the area and reduce puffiness.
Better still, use a roller for more effective absorption of the ingredients.
What ingredients should I look for in an eye cream?
Here the answer varies depending on what you want from your eye cream. So, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and vitamin E effectively hydrate and refresh the skin around the eyes. Vitamin C has an antioxidant effect and helps fight dark circles, while caffeine reduces puffiness under the eyes.
Again, if your goal is to combat fine lines and wrinkles then you should definitely look for creams that contain retinoids or peptides.
Look for the eye cream whose combination of ingredients will best suit your skin.
Finally, create small good habits that will help you have a rested look and healthy skin.
- Make sure you are consistent in your use of your eye cream morning and night.
- Get at least an 8-hour sleep so that your skin can regenerate and rest.
- Drink enough water to hydrate your body and by extension your skin.
